Tips to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution

2016

“New year, new me. This is the year I finally accomplish my New Year’s resolution!”

I’m sure we all start the New Year with that mindset. But you’ll probably end up forgetting that goal in four months. Trust me, I know the feeling you get a year from now when you remember how your New Year’s resolution only lasted 2 months.

I recently just finished a psychology course in motivation. No, I’m not an expert but I did learn a few cool tips that will help you accomplish your goal so this will become that year you finally accomplish something.

TIP 1: TALK ABOUT IT

Tell your family, friends, and pets. Tell your friend’s parents, your neighbour, the random person walking down the street. Tell everyone about your goal! Having this communication will increase the likelihood of achieving the goal because it provides the motivation to keep yourself  seen as a competent person in the eyes of others. Also they probably ask you about it in several months from now. Let’s try to avoid the awkward conversation about you forgetting the goal.

TIP 2: MAKE BABY GOALS

By baby goals I mean small goals you can finish in a day, a week, or a month. These goals are the steps to finishing your overall goal. To make these baby goals you want to think about the large goal and move backwards. For example, if your New Year’s resolution is to lose 20 pounds then examples of baby goals would be: go to the gym 3 times a week, have take out for one meal once a week, drink the required amount of water in a day, etc.

TIP 3 : TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

Tracking your progress will allow for feedback. Feedback is important to goals because it’ll tell you how far or close you are to the goal, this will hopefully then provide more motivation. Example of feedback with the same goal to lose weight would be fitting into a size smaller of pants.

TIP 4: DON’T FREAK OUT OVER A SLIP

I have a tendency to freak out over the littlest set back and use this as a sign to stop pursuing my goal. Trust me, the set back is not worth giving up. Breathe, everyone messes up, accept it and push forward. You’ll thank yourself later.

I hope these 4 tips helped you, and if you need anyone to talk about your New Year’s resolution feel free to contact me! I would love to hear from you all.
